Saga of the Sunflowers

When I was very little I experienced sunflowers...Big, beautiful and unapologetic about being "a little much". I planted them in my backyard last year and this year I took my sunflowers super seriously, because they're sunflowers...OF COURSE! They're pretty much the bosses of the garden, so I give them their props, gladly. This page documents their growth, and my reflections on their beauty....

We put the seed, put the seed for life...(I am paraphrasing of course)

We've heard of the rose which grew from concrete but in her' we're cultivating the sunflowers which gotta grow from cement... Sprouting! Yeah what!

I collected river driftwood and painted the wood terra cotta. Nine pieces makes the edge of the bed. Superstitiously, I found this wishbones shaped piece and decided it was appropriate to use for this garden. 13 days in -  My sunflowers, in this concrete riddled yard, might survive this cold on a wish, a prayer and a s*#@ ton of irony...If ya look close, the sunflower sprouts can been seen...

Watering my sunflowers every day with my trusty green watering can!

I planted six marigolds in the sunflower garden to keep away the undesirables!

My sunflowers aspire to be as awesome as this sunflower painted by my former after school student.

I have heard of:

”If ya build it, they’ll come”

Apparently I ascribe
to the motto :

”If ya grown ‘em, they’ll come”

My best "go garden hat"...taken by my friend. Apparently I garden incognito to avoid the paparazzi...

30 Days in - May Showers...beat up my sunflowers! I got back from working at MAYfest and they're in need of some serious attention! I hafta thin 'em out and give the extras to anybody interested! I plan on giving my nieces their own individual pots with the excess. They're coming up in abundance and we're making progress. They're at about 5-6 inches at this point. What they need is some sun and a pep talk....

Did they recover? Ya can bet your green...whatever...I am thinning them every so often but every time I have to remove a plant, it pains my plant-loving heart...My valiant sunflowers be committed to owning their space and ruling their garden. The marigolds? Their humble guardians! My sunflowers be killin' it, son...They grow in NY so this is how we must talk about them...OF COURSE!

They're up to my chin! Progress. what, what!!!

A view from the ground floor...Sunflowers teach us this: Be careful who ya hurt on your way up, because at some point the people ya hurt because you though they were only tiny seedlings with no voice and no place in the garden, grow and all the sudden they're looking down on your face.....and letting you know they were always more important than ya to begin with.

Sigh! A neighborhood meaner went through my backyard and pushed them all over!!! Meaners are not fun! So they're not invited...ever.

Now they're beautifying my little house!!! sunflowers, I say, "you're always welcome at my table!" Sunflowers are best served smoking hot and wearing something sweet...to nobody who ruins gardens for no real reasons.
